Manti Te'o: A Victim or a Liar?

Manti Te’o: A Victim or a Liar?

A Victim or a Liar? Everybody who has heard the story about the star Notre Dame linebacker’s supposed girlfriend who died in September of leukemia, only to have been found out to not exist, are asking themselves this very question.  For those who haven’t heard the story, here’s a quick background: Manti Te’o, a Heisman trophy finalist in college football, claims to have had an online relationship with a girl from Stanford. Then, on the same day his grandmother died, this girl also died from leukemia.  Shortly after Notre Dame lost the national championship game to Alabama, the story broke that this girlfriend never really existed and Te’o got scammed.  Since then, the biggest question, and really one of the last ones that remain: Is Manti Te’o a victim of some scam artists or was this whole scheme planned out and Te’o even one of the conspirators?

The article above is named Manti Te'o denies he was part of girlfriend hoax.” Recently, Manti Te’o spoke publicly about the hoax for the first time and the answers and information that he gave is basically put together in this article.  The gist of his story is that he is completely innocent and that he had no idea of the hoax while it was occurring.

My opinion?  Te’o is a complete and utter liar and this whole hoax is nothing more than a sick publicity stunt.  Nothing in this story adds up and many facts seem very fishy.  The first one is the fact that this whole relationship was over the internet.  A scam artist would have to be very, very dedicated to have time to sit down and talk to Te’o over the phone every single night for six months.  On the other hand, if Te’o knew about the hoax then he could say they talked, or even met (which he did say, then admitted he lied about it).  Next is the timing of the events in the story.  The supposed death of the girlfriend was within a few hours of the death of Manti Teo’s grandmother’s.  Add this to the fact that there was no previous mention of her having leukemia and you either get a very ignorant Manti Te’o, or you get a conspirator.  The other timing issue is the timing of when the “non-existent girlfriend” story broke.  It was within a couple weeks after the end of the national championship game.  Coincidence?  Of course not, Te’o’s college career is over and waiting to make the story public was nothing more than another publicity stunt ending his senior year, and making his NFL draft stock that much more intriguing (Te’o first told the story to Notre Dame officials around Christmastime).  The last confusing part of this story is the lack of apparent motive by the perpetrators.  If Te’o truly is innocent, then why?  Why go to all this trouble just to mess with a college football player?

These questions and (lack of) answers have me convinced that this so-called hoax is nothing more than a publicity stunt, with Manti Te’o as a (co-)conspirator.  What do you think?  Is Te’o a Victim or a Liar?

  1. I cannot agree more with you. Manti Te'o is most definitely a liar, or is very delusional. I would have to guess that he used the story to help his campaign for the Heisman Trophy, and when he did not earn it, he decided to tell the first people about it. Then, after Notre Dame was swept in the National Title Game, he decided to tell everyone so that he would still get attention and remain a household name going into the NFL draft. I cannot see anyone going to so much trouble over one college kid. I also think that his story was a little sketchy, with her dying of leukemia, a disease Te'o had never talked about her having. I think this is very odd, and involved a lot of work to implement (vocab. word), more work than I would be willing to put toward keeping a lie going. This whole thing may backfire on him still because if he does get drafted, it will be a long time before any of his teammates can respect the "guy with the fake girlfriend". If I were in charge of an NFL team, I would not even draft him because I would not want him in charge of my defense or have to deal with any emotional problems he might have. If he is innocent, well the guys on Sports Center said it best: "If he got tricked this much by a 'college girl', just imagine what will happen when he meets NFL girls!"

    1. Exactly. He said that he was going to dedicate the rest of his season to his girlfriend after she had already "died." How many games did he say that he was going to dedicate to her or how many times did he mention her leukemia prior to her "death?" None.

    2. I just have to disagree with you about being drafted. An NFL owner wants any player that can help the team win the Superbowl no matter the off the field issues. Look at Michael Vick who, as soon as he was seen as fit to play, was signed by the Eagles after serving time for being a part of a dog fighting ring. Also in 2000 Ray Lewis, a star linebacker of the Ravens, was linked to a double murder which left many question marks; regardless he stayed on the team and that year helped his team win the Superbowl. As long as Te'o can produce on the field the owners aren't too worried.

    3. There's half the problem John. Te'o is a mediocre football player at best. He couldn't tackle and over half of his amazing "interceptions" were tipped right to him. He had 2.5 tfl this year and 0.5 sacks I believe. So how does he get all this attention? His little media stunts.

    4. He was the face of the major team all year, he would've been seen anyway.

    5. ??? And how did he get to be the face?? By getting publicity. If I wanted to become the face of Creighton Prep, I wouldn't be able to go to school like everybody else, then go home and do nothing every day after school.

  2. A story that I saw on Scout.com today: Manti Te'o admits to Katie Couric that he knew of the hoax as early as early December.

  3. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8875990/lawyer-ronaiah-tuiasosopo-was-voice-talking-manti-teo

The voice of the supposed girlfriend was actually a man???? I understand voice cover-up, but how can you not distinguish the difference between a male and female personality?

  4. So I guess the voice was the hoaxer's female cousin now. And apparently the man behind the hoax, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo is scheduled to appear on Dr. Phil. That's when you know things are getting weird.

  5. What happened to the sports athletes that many people looked up to and admired for their athleticism and amazing plays on the field. Why do they feel they need more attention and make inconsequential plots like this to drag our attention.
